"The goal of the Center is to sustain rural communities in South Carolina by enhancing the knowledge economy and fostering economic growth and well-being."
The Awake Center Stands for the Advancement of Workforce And Knowledge Economy, which is a South Carolina Center of Excellence. The purpose of the Centers of Excellence grant program is to enable eligible institutions to serve as resource teacher preparation programs. These resource centers develop model programs, conduct research, disseminate information, and provide training for K-12 and higher education personnel in the center’s specific area of expertise.
The AWAKE Center at the University of South Carolina’s College of Education is a professional development initiative funded by the South Carolina Commission on Higher Education. The Center includes these areas of focus:
- Preparing students for careers in teaching science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).
- After graduation, guaranteeing placement of students in teaching positions in rural South Carolina communities.
- Partnering with businesses and organizations to advance rural South Carolina communities in industry, knowledge and economic growth.
- Offering professional development for teachers in rural school districts that integrates problem-based learning in all subject areas.
